Adware (combination of words advertisement and software) is a piece of software that is designed to display advertisements. It is typically considered a type of malware.

How it works

Adware often displays its advertisement payloads on the desktop or through a popup instead of through a web page or other media. It has been known to be bundled with otherwise legitimate programs through installers, and some legitimate programs also display advertisements, such as McAfee.
