User freedom
[edit | edit source]Products that are a part of this service, such as home appliances like the Bosch 500 Series dishwasher, require users to register with a BSH-owned single-sign-on provider and create a cloud account to enable their WiFi-enabled capabilities.[2] Only after this is the user able to disconnect these appliances from the cloud for offline use, with no local API provided.
Incidents
[edit | edit source]YouTuber Jeff Geerling reports forced account requirement to enable Bosch 500 Series dishwasher (March 2025)
[edit | edit source]On 23 March 2025, YouTuber Jeff Geerling, under his second channel Level 2 Jeff, uploaded a video[3] detailing his process of installing a new Bosch 500 Series dishwasher in his home and, only after installing it, realizing it required access to his Wi-Fi network and an account in the Bosch's Home Connect Cloud. Basic features like rinsing and delayed washing would not function without internet access. He detailed how the device took several seconds to boot up, having touch controls that didn't work properly and not having buttons for basic controls. Looking into the manual, several options were marked with an asterisk, with the related small text on the bottom of the page indicating a "required account on the Home Connect Cloud". Because the service was free, Geerling anticipated that Bosch may require a subscription fee in the future or shut the service down when it was no longer viable for the manufacturer to maintain it.
The manufacturer claimed the forced account to be necessary for security and called the offline option, which was only available after account registration, "No Cloud mode."[4] The primary function of the app is not to control the device, but to up-sell more B/S/H products, evident by the fact that advertisements are immediately shown upon owning the app, despite it taking two taps to see the remaining time on the washing machine during a running cycle.
