User freedom

[edit | edit source]

All modern Intel platforms include the Intel Management Engine, a proprietary co-processor with access to the system's memory and network interfaces, which users cannot disable or replace on current hardware. The Free Software Foundation has described the Management Engine as "an attack on computer users' freedom".[1] Its Boot Guard feature, which some device manufacturers enable, restricts those devices to manufacturer-signed firmware, preventing the installation of alternatives such as coreboot.[2]
