Monopoly status in New York towns (1973—Present)

[edit | edit source]

Optimum has historically benefited from a lack of competition in some New York territories, holding monopoly status in towns such as Brookhaven. Until 2026, the town had only had a cable and internet contract with Optimum (with those in the town declaring Optimum an "effective monopoly") before accepting a 5-year franchise deal with Verizon in 2026 to bring FiOS to Brookhaven.[4] Despite rumors that city council members of Brookhaven had colluded with Cablevision to maintain their Optimum offering as a monopoly, town leaders had long made clear that competition was something that they wanted for the town, voicing their concerns to the public at least as early as 2013.[5]
